CASE STUDY: DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS - EXECUTIVE LEASING
A Resultex executive was engaged to undertake the role of Manager Information & Technology (now titled CIO) for a three year period from 1998 to mid 2001. He had responsibility for the entire direction and operation of IT at Department of Corrections, including the management of 50 permanent staff and a similar number of contractors and secondees during project peaks.
The Resultex executive was instrumental in delivering the following:
- Change of IOMS support developer from the original USA firm to onshore support.
- Change of IT platform FM provider from a single provider to a restructured outsourcing model of multiple vendors, with a separate help desk provider reporting on platform outages.
- A number of successful IOMS software releases including a multi-million dollar project for the introduction of sentencing reform legislation.
- The creation of an in-house IOMS help desk.
- Change of IT architecture from distributed client/server to centralised server WTS/Citrix, culminating in two large server farms with total disaster recovery capability, improved response time performance, greater robustness and a reduction in the total cost of ownership (by approx 30%).
- The restructuring of the IT unit, its management and operational processes.
- The review/updating of the IT Strategic Plan and responsibility for delivering projects and a number of initiatives that came out of that plan including such as things as an expansion of the intranet services, boundary management security initiatives and data network outsourcing services contracts.
- Active involvement in the Justice sector information strategy, its implementation and the sector working groups.
- Robust relationship management with Police and Courts.
- Responsibility for financial management of the IT Unit's annual $8 million capital budget and $16 million operating budget.
- Recruitment of a permanent replacement at the end of the three year tenure.
The Department of Corrections benefited from the collective experience of Resultex and its personnel during a period that was crucial to the creation of sound IT practices, providing it with the platform that has made it such a successful IT operation today.
